It was July then by Bharath Upendra

The rain was as unpredictable as the food they made at the food outlet adjacent to the bus stop that no-one frequents and no bus stops at. The highway had trucks lined up during the night and was almost deserted in the afternoons when I rode 25 kilometres from home just for the heck of it. I watched people sitting under the bus shelter; my bike parked on the road, being washed by the downpour. I wanted to walk into the shack and order something to eat, probably Idlis, but I didn’t. The noises around weren’t deafening but loud enough to not let me concentrate on my thoughts or the memories that rushed through. For some reason, whatever I’m surrounded by had a soothing charm to them unlike the peace at home that came with responsibilities chained to it.

Chaos feels like freedom.

  1. Bharath writes of that feeling that overwhelms many of us at different times. Breaking free – not only physically – but mental liberation from the rut called life. The rain does often evoke sadness and contemplation, and the need to just get out and drive or ride. I’d say twenty-five kilometres is quite a stretch and maybe some chai and pakoras could have hit the right taste buds. And let’s forget about responsibilities and the long chains that drag behind them. Savor a few sweet moments of freedom…
    Congratulations Bharath!

  2. Congratulations for this lovely piece. There is definitely something that is refreshing and calming to me about a good down pour as well. It is similar to the washing of the earth and the cleansing of our minds. You described this so well. Blessings to you.
